Night Insight

An interactive platform combining lighting data and virtual walkthroughs to capture how people experience urban spaces after dark.

Overview

As part of Arup’s ongoing night-time research and analysis, the Night Insight tool was developed to explore how people perceive and experience urban spaces after dark. The goal was to capture qualitative and quantitative insights into public safety, lighting quality, and emotional response to night-time environments.

Responsibility

I contributed to the development and delivery of the Night Insight tool, which integrates 360° photography, video walkthroughs, and environmental lighting data (lux, lumen, and luminance levels). The platform allows users to virtually explore night-time spaces and annotate their experiences—highlighting feelings of safety, discomfort, or joy in context. This interactive feedback loop helped bridge technical lighting assessments with human-centred design insights.

Outcome

The tool became a valuable asset in night-time urban analysis projects, enabling more informed, community-aligned lighting strategies. It provided clients and stakeholders with a visually rich, data-supported basis for improving perceptions of safety and atmosphere in public spaces after dark.
